Christmas

Christmas Decorating on a Budget

Christmas is my favourite time of year! I love the gift of giving, but mostly I love spending time with my family, my parents, siblings, nephews and this year finally a niece!

Traditionally we spend Christmas Day at my parents, but this year I will be hosting Christmas lunch at my house. EEEK! I have high standards to live up to! As a family of six on a single income I have a very tight budget, after stressing myself silly, I headed to Ocean Keys to get my Christmas shopping started.

I am a regular shopper at Ocean Keys and love their wide range of retail stores, another advantage to getting your Christmas shopping done at Ocean Keys is they have a free creche every Friday morning between 10am – 12pm until Friday 21 December. I easily found everything I was looking for in a single shopping trip and stayed within my budget.

The key to shopping on a budget is PLANNING! Know your budget, know your theme, write lists, track your spending, and plan to get your Christmas shopping done early to avoid the last minute dash. Other tips and tricks; don’t be afraid of ‘do it yourself’ items - adding a creative twist is fun and the kids will love getting involved. Look out for loyalty programs – I saved 50% at Riot for being a Riot Club Member. Avoid ‘buy now, pay later’ schemes such as After Pay, the financial debt always catches up with you.

My aim was to create a lux Christmas table for the adults, and something more low-key and fun for the kids to enjoy, so what did I buy?

Thingz Gifts
White tablecloth ($14.99), although I picked this up from the Christmas section it is perfect for all year round use.
Set of three decorative Christmas presents ($39.99), these are gorgeous and an absolute bargain.
Luxury Christmas crackers ($24.99), these crackers are on the expensive side, I didn’t buy them until I had all the other items I needed to ensure I didn’t blow my budget.

Adairs
Gold placemats ($6.99 pack of 2), again these can be used all year round.
Light-up cone tree ($20.99), available in 3 different sizes, I went for the medium, Requires 3x AA batteries.
I had no idea that Adairs would have such a great range of affordable Christmas items!

Red Dot
Assorted Christmas baubles ($2.00).
Small Christmas crackers ($5.00) for the kids table.

Riot Art & Craft
Mini Christmas tree ($7.49).

Typo
Name tags and holders ($14.99), the Christmas bauble holders are absolutely adorable and possibly my favourite item on the table.

Two Buck Shop and More
I could have gone mad shopping in here, we managed to find almost everything we needed for our kids table for bargain prices, tablecloth ($5.00), plastic plates ($2.00 each) and Christmas napkins ($2.50).

Kmart
Pack of 2 white cotton napkins 43cm x 43cm ($2.00).
Pack of 2 bass look napkin rings ($3.00).
My 8 year old helped me put together the kids table, the only thing on her wishlist was a Christmas Nutcracker ($10.00).
Instead of name tags we used the Design Your Own Christmas Bauble Set ($5.00), the kids loved making these and they turned out fantastic.

Target
White dinner plates ($2.00 each), side plates ($1.00 each), I did have my heart set on white plates with a gold trim from House but when you are shopping on a budget you can’t be afraid to make sacrifices.
With the money I saved on the plates, I was able to afford stunning gold wine glasses ($3.00 each) and gold cutlery ($25.00 16 piece set).

I found everything I was looking for at Ocean Keys and it was easy to stick to my Christmas budget!
I am so happy with how my table setting came together, I think I might even give my mum a run for her money 😉.

Merry Christmas and Happy Shopping!
