When Pantone, the global authority on colour, announced its colour of the year for 2016 was in fact two shades – Rose Quartz (a chalky pale pink) and Serenity (a soft, faded blue) it set off a chain reaction in fashion.
Suddenly, milky pastel shades and icy cool tones were the hues that made us feel right on trend. Just like your favourite over-exposed, slightly saturated Instagram filter, these new shades will add an instant up-to-date feel to your whole wardrobe.
Designers around the world have embraced these shades and women are discovering just how versatile the colours can be, paired back with neutrals or worn tone on tone.
These cooling shades might seem counter-intuitive when we are talking about winter clothing but the philosophy behind the colour is all about creating feelings of calm, relaxation and respite in turbulent times and couldn’t we all do with a little bit of that?
Here’s a guide to adopting these cool new hues into your wardrobe.
The new wear-everywhere neutral. Try adding a pair of grey jeans into high rotation in place of blue or black jeans. They will go with all the same things your regular jeans do but will give everything a fresh new twist. Or wear a pale grey knit in place of black to lighten your winter mood.
Far from chilly, this feel-good shade of blue will make you feel warm and fuzzy from the inside out. Try a pale blue denim jacket for a twist on a classic or add a pale blue shirt into your black or navy work wear for an instant update.
This sweet shade will lift your winter classics in black or navy into a much warmer place, try adding a soft pink knit under a jacket for the office or slip a nudie-pink heel on with your jeans for a fresh night time look.
Far from glacial, a creamy white piece added to a wintery look can have the impact of a cold rush of air into an overheated room. Try an off-white coat in place of your usual grey or black or put a white knit on with your jeans for a cool take on weekend dressing.
