How to look chic and cosy: A fashion stylist's tips

With the weather cooling down, it’s the perfect time to fill your wardrobe with something chic. Sydney-based fashion stylist Jane Mow shares her top winter fashion tips for looking chic in the colder months.

The weather is cooling down, the days are getting shorter and the Netflix ‘to watch’ queue is getting longer. It can all mean only one thing — winter is well and truly on its way.

But while many of us mourn the end of long, sunny days, the colder months have plenty to offer, too. At the top of that list (just under hot chocolate and comfort food) is Winter fashion!

From boots that were made for walking to chic statement coats, there are so many winter fashion staples to help you brave the chill. But, how do you put it all together in a way that is chic, cosy and practical?

Here, Sydney-based fashion stylist Jane Mow shares her top tips for looking stylish in the colder months.

1. Layer like a pro
“Layering is the easiest way to look chic and ‘put together’ while still staying warm and cosy, says Jane. “Plus, it helps you prepare for the unpredictable weather conditions, whether that’s rain, hail or shine!” Try layering a lightweight sweater under a statement coat, or a vest over a dress. That way, you can simply remove your layers if you’re going inside or the weather becomes unseasonably warm.

2. Boot it
If there’s one thing every winter wardrobe needs, it’s a practical, statement boot. “Boots are so versatile,” says Jane. “You can dress them up by pairing them with a dress and patterned tights, or get a more laidback street style look with cuffed jeans and a chunky knit.”

The key is to find your one, signature pair of boots, tailored to your body type, that will look great with everything. For example, while knee-high boots look fabulous on tall people, a heeled ankle boot is a great choice for someone with a more petite stature.

3. Pair monochromes with warmth
When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with this winter colour scheme: black, white and caramel. The caramel adds a touch of warmth to this otherwise minimalistic and monochrome palette, which is perfect for the cooler months. “An outfit made up of these colours any one, two, or all three— will always feel stylish,” says Jane. “Just be sure that the whites are true white (no warm or yellowy off-white) and your blacks are true black, in order to make this look really ‘pop’.”

4. Mix textures
Ever wondered how some people manage to make a relatively simple outfit look elegant and interesting? Often, the secret is texture! “By mixing and matching different fabrics, you can breathe new life into otherwise neutral outfits,” says Jane. “For example, you could transform a classic all-black outfit into something more elevated by sporting leather pants with a knitted sweater and a wool coat over the top.” Some great winter textures include faux fur, shearling and tweed.

5. Spice things up with statement pieces
Accessories are the easiest way to add the extra ‘wow factor’ to any outfit. This doesn’t always have to mean handbags and jewellery (although they are always a nice touch).

“Don’t underestimate the power of a statement winter accessory, like a bright scarf, beanies or tights,” says Jane. “You could also add a coloured belt over your woollen blazer or coat for a more polished look.”

A key rule of thumb to keep in mind here is — less is more. It’s best to stick to just one statement piece in an otherwise neutral outfit, rather than going all-out on bright accessories.

6. Create a hard-working wardrobe
The best kind of wardrobe works hard for you all year round — not just in winter! “I recommend creating a transeasonal wardrobe that can effortlessly take you from summer to winter without even breaking a sweat!” says Jane. “This means investing in a few key pieces like a great blazer, some tailored pants and a collared shirt, that are high quality and will last a lifetime.” This way, you can just add a few extra pieces to your wardrobe to change things up for the season, like a statement scarf or an on-trend jacket.

Adapting your wardrobe for the colder months doesn’t have to be dull or difficult. With these simple styling tips, you can look like your most elegant self in autumn, winter and beyond!
